Once upon a time, it was royalty. We began by wanting to be close to knights and nobility, and while we now recognize how silly it is to assign rule based on blood, at least they did something. They governed.
At one point it was Charles Lindberg, the first man to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. He sat on a wicker chair and peed in a jar, but he made it, and with that flight he forever changed the world.
And as movies and radio came, we began to worship athletes, musicians, and actors. Sure, we knew a few big names from the stage, but recorded audio and visual gave them influence. They provided entertainment and contributed to society on only the most superficial level, but it required talent, so there was that.
And then we found reality TV stars, who did nothing except be beautiful and mean and fight all the time on television. It took no talent and they provided nothing to society but the most shallow, toxic kind of entertainment.
And then there was Alex from Target.
